National Learning Week 2021: How Frontier Support keeps its employees skilled

Learning is a lifelong process, or so the saying goes. And when it comes to learning at work, the training at Frontier Support never stops.

We say this because right from the moment employees join our business, the team is constantly undertaking individual courses, progressing their training and gaining new accreditations.

Iqbal Sohawon, Deputy Head of Quality, Registration & Training, said: “Frontier’s core client group are people with complex needs and includes those who have autism, learning disabilities and present behaviours of concern.

“Therefore, the people we support require competent, motivated and professional Support Workers and Managers who are always up to date with the latest practices in the world of care.”

With May 17th – 23rd marking National Learning Week, we wanted to share what learning goes on here at Frontier.

 

Gaining accreditations

Right from the very start, when our carers, managers and staff join the team, they are required to complete 18 online training courses, each of which are accredited by the British Accreditation Council (BAC).

These initial training courses include:

  • Challenging Behaviour
  • Confidentiality
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (CoSHH)
  • Covid-19
  • Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS)
  • Diabetes and Diversity & Equality

 

New starters then attend a face-to-face seven-day induction and Care Certificate course in their first two weeks, and four more face-to-face courses in Basic Life Support, Health & Safety, Medication Administration and Safeguarding Adult.

 

But it doesn’t stop there

Our new joiners will then go on to complete Essential Autism and Safe Manual Handling courses. The Essential Autism course is licensed from the National Autistic Society (NAS).

Iqbal continued: “In addition to ongoing supervision and support from Managers, observations of new starters and team members ensure learning is effective and provide further opportunities for development.

“You won’t just have a job here at Frontier. You will have a career. Our team can rise through the ranks and progress their careers through the many different roles of care.”

 

Managers learn too

While our new starters are equipped with all the learning and skills they need to complete their role effectively, we ensure our managers receive training and development sessions. If they want to, many of our managers can complete their Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management in Adult Care.

“Training is such an important part of any career path because it gives employees an opportunity to broaden their horizons, improve their skills and feel confident in their skillset to do their role,” Iqbal adds. “It also makes them feel valued in the workplace – and rightly so!”
