FPA Sexual Awareness Training

FPA Sexual Awareness Training
Published: 23 November 2016

“People with learning disabilities encounter all the same sex, relationships and work issues as everyone else but they often don’t have anyone to go to for help. At Frontier Support we provide imaginative, specialist care and support to people with a variety of needs and we aim to help them live active and socially inclusive lives incorporating supported employment, life skills and a range of leisure activities.

So, it seemed a natural extension of our aim to put the people we support in the driving seat of their own lives to send our behavioural lead, Lee Elkin, on a Family Planning Association training course on delivering sex and relationship work with people with learning disabilities.

Lee said: “This training has enabled me to build on my existing skills and knowledge and I’m looking forward to sharing what I learnt with the Frontier team so that we can provide the people we support with relevant information at the right time and in the best way for them.”

Aim of course

To support participants to develop their current knowledge, skills and confidence to plan, deliver and evaluate sex and relationships work to groups and individuals with learning disabilities.

Learning outcomes

  • Identify their own skills base and opportunities for development
  • Structure a programme of sex and relationships work for a group or an individual with learning disabilities
  • Design a session they can deliver in their workplaces
  • Use a range of resources and exercises
  • Implement inclusive practice
